DANISH
A randomized trial in 1116 people with symptomatic heart failure that was not caused by coronary artery disease (ejection fraction 35% or less). Half received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and half received usual clinical care; in both groups 58% also received cardiac resynchronization therapy. After a median of 67.6 months, deaths from any cause were not significantly different (21.6% with an ICD, 23.4% with usual care). Sudden cardiac death was less frequent with an ICD (4.3% against 8.2%).

-
Usual clinical care
Intervention
Patients assigned to usual clinical care (the control group), 560 patients (abstract). The registry labels this arm B, types it active comparator and names optimal medical treatment as its intervention.
