Surgical aortic valve replacement

An operation in which a surgeon replaces a diseased aortic valve with a mechanical valve or a biological (tissue) valve. It is the comparison for TAVR in the PARTNER 3 and Evolut Low Risk trials. NHLBI lists stroke and blood clots among the risks of valve replacement, together with injury to the kidneys or heart.

Overview

Technical summary

Open-heart valve replacement, as the comparison for catheter replacement. NHLBI separates the surgical route from the catheter route and describes mechanical and biological (tissue) valves. In PARTNER 3 the registry describes the comparison as SAVR with a commercially available bioprosthetic valve; the Evolut Low Risk registry says commercial SAVR with a commercially approved surgical bioprosthesis. This record gives no outcome figures of its own: the trial claims are filed under TAVR and the CoreValve and Evolut record.
