Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER)
A way to repair a leaking heart valve with a device delivered by a catheter, a thin tube passed through a blood vessel. The name is short for transcatheter edge-to-edge repair. It is used on the mitral valve (the MitraClip device) and on the tricuspid valve (the TriClip device). In trials it was added to medicines and compared with medicines alone.

Overview
Technical summary
The TRILUMINATE abstract calls its procedure percutaneous tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), and the FDA TriClip approval wording uses transcatheter edge-to-edge valve repair. The COAPT registry lists a paper titled with mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair among the publications of the trial, and the COAPT abstract itself calls the procedure transcatheter mitral-valve repair. NHLBI lists a device implanted to treat mitral regurgitation among the repair options, noting it suits people for whom open-heart surgery is not advised. This record describes the approach by the names and indications in those sources and gives no account of how the device works, which none of them states.
How it works
A device delivered by catheter repairs a leaking mitral or tricuspid valve (names and indications as the sources give them; the mechanism is not described in them).
Strengths
- COAPT (mitral, with heart failure): fewer heart-failure hospitalizations and fewer deaths within 24 months than medicines alone
- TRILUMINATE Pivotal (tricuspid): a better combined result than medicines alone (win ratio 1.48), with a larger improvement in quality-of-life score and less regurgitation at 30 days
Limitations
- COAPT's registry lists no masking and TRILUMINATE's lists masking of the outcomes assessor only; both were funded by Abbott, the FDA applicant for the device
- TRILUMINATE: the abstract reports no apparent difference between groups in death or tricuspid-valve surgery, or in heart-failure hospitalization
- Results apply to the patients each trial enrolled
Required infrastructure
- A multidisciplinary heart team (the FDA wording for the secondary mitral regurgitation and the TriClip indications)
