DASH-Sodium

A US feeding trial that tested the DASH diet and three levels of sodium on blood pressure. 412 people were randomly assigned to a control diet like the typical American diet or to the DASH diet, and within their diet each person ate high, intermediate and low sodium foods, 30 days each, in random order. Both lowering sodium and the DASH diet lowered blood pressure, and the two together lowered it the most.

Overview

Design
Parallel-group comparison of a control diet and the DASH diet, with a randomized cross-over of three sodium levels (high, intermediate, low) of 30 consecutive days each within the assigned diet. The registry records the primary purpose as prevention.

Technical summary

NHLBI-sponsored trial (NCT00000608), registry phase 2, parallel groups with a randomized cross-over of sodium levels, primary purpose prevention. The registry holds no enrollment count, no locations and no results section; the count of 412 is from the PubMed abstract. The registry says DASH-Sodium built on and extended the earlier NHLBI-initiated DASH study. Start 1997-02, completion 2002-07. Numbers are on the claim. Only the PubMed abstract and the registry record were read.

Arms

  • DASH diet

    Intervention DASH eating plan
