## In plain language

The 2022 recommendation statement issued by the US Preventive Services Task Force on taking a statin to prevent cardiovascular disease in adults who do not already have it. The Task Force grades its advice by age, by risk factors and by the estimated chance of a cardiovascular event over the next ten years. This statement updates its 2016 recommendation.

## Technical summary

JAMA 2022;328(8):746-753, doi 10.1001/jama.2022.13044, PMID 35997723. The USPSTF page dates the final statement August 23, 2022. Only the PubMed abstract and that date line were read; the full statement was not. Grades as the abstract labels them: B for ages 40 to 75 with one or more risk factors (abnormal blood fats, diabetes, hypertension, smoking) and a 10-year risk, as estimated, of at least 10%; C for the same group at 7.5% to under 10%; and an I statement from age 76. The USPSTF permits reuse of its work only under its copyright notice, so this atlas states the recommendations in its own words, with a citation and a link.
